Dr. Lifu Chen

After receiving his M.Sc. degree in mining form the University of Pittsuburgh, he became a member of the American Mining Association, and worked as a miner. His last job before returning to China was at the Marvin coal mine at Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Chen founded the Chinese Cultural Garden and the Sino-American Cultural Association.
His son, James T.C. Chen, is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Lifu Medical Research Foundation (see page 2 here).

Roscoe Pound wrote the introduction to Chen's Philosophy of Life from Nanking in 1948.

"[Roscoe Pound] went to China, at the invitation of the Chinese government, to begin the task of reorganizing the Chinese judicial systern. In connection with this task, he began studying Chinese,having already mastered French, German, Italian, Spanish, Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and some Russian."

Dr. Lifu Chen through the Sino-Indian Cultural Society may have facilitated Pound's introduction to India. Dr. Chen was a Standing Director of the Sino-Indian Cultural Society which had many members on the Indian side at the University of Calcutta. Membership on the Indian side included Mahatma Gandhi.
