Jurist Han De Pei

I appears this scholar listened to Roscoe Pound's lectures at Harvard in 1942. I found this information from the University of Nanking
or Nanjing University. I do not know if this is where Pound was based in 1948 when he wrote the introduction to Chen's book, but it would not surprise me. Maybe Han De Pei facilitated Pound's journey to China. He is portrayed here as the Father of Environmental Law in China.

The connection between Pound and Pei could be linked to environmentalism as well. Pound is famous for receiving the first Ph.D. granted by the University of Nebraska. His dissertation is unique for being the first dissertation on ecology written in english.

Translated to English from Chinese here:
"In 1942 I transferred from Canada toward USA, continued to the Harvard University law school to conduct the research... In addition, I also listened to at that time several famous scholars' classes, if 格里斯 沃尔德 (Erwin N. Griswold)" international 私法 ", 赫德森 (Manley O. Hudeson)" public international law " and 庞德 (Roscoe Pound)" the jurisprudence ", all thought profited 不浅. I in this time, but also composed the international law private Faxin book review and discussed and introduced 庞德 the social law school of thought theory and 凯尔森 (Hane Kelsen) the pure legal science said the article, published the academic publication which distributed to Zhejiang University " thought and time " and other publications."

Roscoe Pound's move from China to India

"I am doing a paper now, for example, on Roscoe Pound's adventures in China. After 20 long, contentious years as dean, looking for a peaceful resting place, he went to China in the midst of its civil war to be an adviser on law reform and legal education to the Guomindang government. He spent three years crawling around prisons and visiting courts, writing a number of fascinating articles. So there is a good precedent on which we can build." -Prof. Bill Alford, Director of the East Asian Legal Studies Program.

Pound gave a series of lectures at the University of Calcutta in 1948 which were published as The Ideal Element in Law (1958).

Roscoe Pound in China
"[Roscoe Pound] went to China, at the invitation of the Chinese government, to begin the task of reorganizing the Chinese judicial systern. In connection with this task, he began studying Chinese, having already mastered French, German, Italian, Spanish, Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and some Russian."

From the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts:
Dr. Lifu Chen through the Sino-Indian Cultural Society may have facilitated Pound's introduction to India. Dr. Chen was a Standing Director of the Sino-Indian Cultural Society which had many members on the Indian side at the University of Calcutta. Membership on the Indian side included Mahatma Gandhi.
